What Is PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Therapy?
PRP is a treatment in which platelet-rich plasma is prepared from a patient’s own blood and injected into the injured or affected area.
- Approximately 10–60 mL of blood is drawn from the patient.
- The blood is processed in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma.
- The resulting PRP is then injected into the area requiring treatment.
The goal of PRP is to support tissue healing through the growth factors contained in platelets.
What Is Stem Cell Therapy?
Stem cell therapy uses stem cells obtained from the patient’s own fat tissue or bone marrow. These cells are believed to have the potential to support tissue repair and regeneration.
Compared with PRP:
- PRP contains growth factors.
- Stem cell therapy contains regenerative cells with the potential to aid tissue repair.
What Conditions Can They Be Used For?
Both treatments may be used for conditions such as:
- Knee osteoarthritis (early to moderate stages)
- Shoulder, elbow, and hip joint disorders
- Meniscus injuries
- Muscle and ligament injuries
- Tendon disorders, including Achilles tendinopathy and tennis elbow
- Certain sports injuries
In some clinics, PRP is also used for hair loss and skin rejuvenation.

How Effective Are These Treatments?
The effectiveness depends on several factors, including the type and severity of the condition, the patient’s age, and overall health.
- In early-stage osteoarthritis, these treatments may help reduce pain and improve joint function.
- In advanced cartilage loss, their benefits are more limited and they are not considered a replacement for joint replacement surgery.
- Scientific studies have shown benefits in some patients, but results vary, and no treatment can guarantee success for everyone.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Because both treatments use the patient’s own blood or cells, the risk of an allergic reaction is low. However, possible side effects include:
- Pain at the injection site
- Temporary swelling
- Bruising
- Infection (rare)
How Many Treatment Sessions Are Needed?
PRP:
- Usually performed in 2–3 sessions.
- Sessions are typically scheduled 2–4 weeks apart.
Stem Cell Therapy:
- Often performed as a single procedure.
- Additional treatments may be considered if recommended by the physician.
Who Is Not a Suitable Candidate?
These treatments may not be appropriate, or may require careful medical evaluation, for people with:
- Active infections
- Bleeding disorders
- Certain patients taking blood-thinning medications
- Certain types of cancer (requires physician assessment)
- Pregnancy or other special medical circumstances
